The Summer of "SUPER"!!
This summer, the summer of 2016, could well be the most profitable and Super Hero Block Buster summer we have ever seen. There are so many giant films coming out this summer it is hard to keep them all straight. Here is a guide to this summer's future hits.
Unflattering Imitation
March 9, 2016
Hey all you lovers of HGTV, tell me if this sounds familiar? "Husband and wife dynamos Rob and Lisa Brandsma own and operate Brandsma Renos & Design, a renovation and design business in Abbotsford, British Columbia. They help their clients find and then renovate their dream homes – turning dilapidated but potential-rich houses into showplaces. " This is the log line for HGTV Canada's new show called "Forever Home". Fans of the wondrous "Fixer Uppers" will immediately recognize the description. And if they don't they only need to watch the pilot to see that the show is a blatant rip off of Jo and Chip Gains show. I also take offence at that use of the word dynamos!!
Now, I'm all for Canadian content. In fact, most of the DYI content on HGTV and other channels are supplied by Canadians but in the case of this new show I am sorry to say that imitation is definitely not the sincerest form of flattery. The hosts and producers and trying too hard to recreate the charm and wit of the Texas based Fixer Upper. Maybe they have permission to do this, I don't know, but even if they did they have missed the mark.
You cannot out "Gaines" Chip and Joanna. Their natural on air presence is a gig part of the success of the show. Last month I spoke about this wonderful show. I wasn't even going to write about them again so soon but when I caught the sneak peak of "Forever Home" I had to head to my keyboard. An especially hard moment to watch was an awkward attempt and humour by having the husband/contractor run and jump on a trampoline. Again, that's Chip's thing.
I am sure that this new couple are nice people and I am not saying that they should not have their own show but the producers need to take the idea back to the drawing board and re-invent a new format. We already have Jo and Chip, we don't need new ones.
House of Bryan
Fixer Upper
Love and the art of the Reno

My wife and I love to watch HGTV's renovation shows. These types of shows are very popular but the most popular with us are the husband and wife "team up" shows. Traditionally the husband is the contractor and the wife the designer.
Canadian Bryan Baeumler has been on HGTV for years now. He started with DYI and then transitioned to Leave it to Bryan. Within recent years his wife Sarah has joined him for House of Bryan. They built their dream cottage one season and in the following two seasons they renovated a new home for their family. The show is like watching one of those screwball comedies from the 1940's or 50's where the woman drives the man up the wall but somehow, in the end, everything turns out all right.
South of the border, in Waco Texas, live Joanna and Chip Gaines. Chip the contractor and "Jo" the designer will help couples find their dream home out of a list of "Fixer Uppers". Hence the name of the show. Again, the comedy is especially screwball but more like Abbott and Costello. Each hours is an enjoyable look at what goes on behind the scenes of renovations and design.
Both couples here place a high value on family and it is heartwarming to see the interactions with the kids when they make an appearance. I just want to be a part of their world. I would never be helpful with the build or design, I just want to hang out with them. I can image my wife Lorraine helping Chip or Bryan and me, I would sweep up or hand with Sarah or Jo. Help out where ever I could.
